I will be sending a weekly updates to keep all of you in the loop. On Saturday, May 25th, we gathered on the north lawn. Unfortunately I flunked my mastering of the microphone, but Katheryn Ryan, Dick Hutchinson and Peter Charbonnier were brilliant and accompanied by trumpeter, Brett Lardner, bell ringer Stephanie Taylor and cannoneer, Sandy Sanstrom. This was what was said but mostly unheard~ Welcome all to the 2024 Commissioning of Pettipaug Yacht Club. It has been a busy day today and a very busy year for the club. I'd like to introduce the 2024 Officers and Board of Governors who transitioned a long list of "to-do's" into DONE. Vice Commodore: David Wemett Secretary: David Courant: Treasurer: Peter Charbonnier and Past- Commodore: Mischa van Berkel. Membership: Mary Lee Schroeter: Our Board of Governors: Bob Cashman, David Courcy, Doreen Joslow, Sandy Sanstrom, and John Walsh. Each of these members has given so unselfishly of their time, their incredible talents and donned multiple hats. They took on a multitude of challenges and goals and accomplished them with help from many of you. Pettipaug Yacht Club is sustained by volunteers. 40 members came to the April 13 th work party and accomplished a broad number of tasks. Thank you to each and all! So many of our PYC members have given of their time and if I have missed anyone, it was not intentional, my deepest apologies. Special recognition: Your teeth are no longer jarred driving down the PYC road because of member John Morrison and his team who worked in the rain and the dark to ready the road for today. When you've arrived look to your left at our NEW PYC SIGN, custom created for us by the incredibly talented Bob Jankiewicz. The north side of the building was prepped by Sally Emch, Rosie Willis, John Scholes and Bob DelVecchio. The north and south sides and trim were painted by Bill Jones, Toby Doyle and Kurt Reinhold. Francine Cornaglia and Mark Borton did and continue to do whatever is needed at any time. Walk towards the PJSA room...look-up, the new ceiling is the work of Board member John Walsh, Chef/Secretary-David Courant continues to roll up his sleeves for anything that is asked of him, even 2 days out of surgery! A touch of Sandy Sanstrom is everywhere~ docks, boats, motors, ceilings, mowing, moving and more. KUDOS: The Boat yard~ Peter Charbonnier, the Commodore's Room: Amy Pullin, John and Isabel Becker and BOG member Doreen Joslow. Master model maker from Centerbrook Architects, Patrick McCauley installed the new hearth. Women's Sailing Group donated the plants and Lucy Bowditch donated the watering cans. Vice Commodore David Wemett's gardens, Keith Kraner hours on insurance review and the SOS team: Bob Cashman with his incredible IT knowledge and infinite patience, Stephanie, Kathryn, Sandy, Hutch, Lisa F., Jeff and the resilient Toby Doyle . Our 2024 RACE COMMITTEE PRO is Jeff Going and his extensive and devoted race committee team. I would like to introduce our 2024 House and Grounds Attendant: Christopher Pace. Chis will be on duty July and august weekends and you'll see him here and there May and June. Chris will be reporting to Kathryn Ryan Memorial Day, we celebrate with picnics and parades, gatherings with friends~ feeling summer sun on our skin. The somber side of Memorial Day is to remember the lives and sacrifices made by those who served and continue to serve to protect us. Dick Hutchinson recited " In Flander's Field" Peter Charbonnier read the list of PYC deceased members: Emma Alvarez, Richard Buel, Celia Francis, Elizabeth Gourlay, Reese Harris III, John Laundon, Charlie Murphy, Agnieszka Robinson, Thomas Seligson, Sandy Sholovitz and Jacob Wilson. Stephanie Taylor rang 8 Bells . EIGHT BELLS: on a ship, the ringing of bells signifies the end of one's watch while at sea. At the end of the watch eight bells are sounded and the sailor is relieved of his or her post. As a PYC member passes we honor them with the sounding of eight bells as their watch has ended.
