Many think this is the best time of year to sail and enjoy the Connecticut River, with warm water, a consistent breeze and no crowds. Just a few more months to enjoy. This is a long one. Amy THANK YOUâs Mid-Summer Party Thank you Dave Wemett, Dave & Rosalyn Courant and Lisa & Bill Leonard for planning an amazing, festive, fun Fiesta! Turnout was great and the Mariachi Band, courtesy of Dave Wemett, was over the top. It was a wonderful, safe, outdoor celebration that was much needed and enjoyed by all. Mid-Summer Regatta Thank you RC Chair Ed Birch, Kathryn Ryan, Tim Ryan, Laura Ryan, Mark Borton, John Kennedy, Tanya Cutolo, John Scholes and Paul Mikulak for volunteering for Race Committee. Congratulations racers! Tri-Club River Race Series 2021 The Tri-Town River Race Series is three PHRF races hosted by Essex Yacht Club, Corinthian Yacht Club and Pettipaug Yacht Club respectively. There are awards for each individual event and a Tri-Club Trophy for the winner of the Series. The series is a great end of the season race opportunity for smaller PHRF boats. The foliage should be beautiful and the water smooth with fewer powerboats. A Notice of Race describing the Charles Birch Memorial Race and an entry form are linked below. NOR's and entry forms for the EYC Willets Memorial Regatta on 10/2 and the ECYC Clark Memorial Race on 10/9 may be found on their respective web sites. The Skippers meeting is at noon and the water start time is 1pm. This is a distance race scored using the Portsmouth handicap. The course is typically 3 - 4 miles. Depending on the wind direction, boats will sail around a buoy north of Essex Harbor, north of the club and back to the club. The race can take anywhere between 1 - 3 hours based on your boat, skill and luck. All Pettipaug sailors are welcome. We had 26 boats at the summer event and a tremendously talented RC. For this race there will be a separate division, with their own start, for the Scows. Please sign up in advance. Decommissioning, awards and potluck will follow Race Committee, Mark Boat and Safety Boat volunteers needed for 10/16 We are looking for RC volunteers for the Robin Starr Handicap Race and the Charles Birch Memorial Race. Robin Starr Race volunteer duties are similar to the Commodore Race held on Commissioning and the Mid-summer Race. It is a distance race scored using the Portsmouth handicap. Volunteers are needed to set a starting line and time/record finishes. A few Safety and Mark boat drivers are also needed. Generally, volunteers arrive around 11:30 and racing should be done by 3:30-4 (or earlier, depending on wind). Dick Hutchinson will be Chairing this event. The Charles Birch Memorial is a PHRF event for cruising boats. It is part of the Tri-Club River Race Series (Essex Yacht Club, Essex Corinthian Yacht Club & Pettipaug Yacht Club). Ed Birch will be Chairing this event. Fielding two RC's on the same day is a bit of a push for our club. Please consider volunteering for the last events of the 2021 season. PYC Members, Currently, tropical storm Henri and possibly soon to be hurricane Henri is heading our way. We are expecting high winds and serious storm surge with the lunar highest tides in cycle. Please help PYC prevent any loss or damage by helping prepare for this storm. How you can help - 1. Meet at the club Saturday morning, August 21st, at 9 am. Mischa van Berkel (vicecommodore(a)pettipaug.org) will be there to lead the securing of club sailboats and loose items, help pull powerboats and generally batten down the club. Many hands would be greatly appreciated. 2. Take care of your personal boats. Tie down, demast, seriously consider taking homeâ¦ The club is not responsible for damage to your boat. Happy Friday! Just a reminder... The club will be unavailable this Sunday, August 1st, from 8:00 am â 4:00 pm. Pettipaug will be hosting the annual Paul Risseeuw Junior Regatta. Please donât plan on accessing the club during the day. And next week's events... Mid-Summer Race The Mid-Summer Regatta will be held on Saturday, August 7th. The Skippers meeting is at noon and the water start time is 1pm. This is a distance race scored using the Portsmouth handicap. The course is typically 3 - 4 miles. [cid:21b73cd2-c859-4a19-adbb-ccd9f55bad02] Commodoreâs Update July 2021 Happy summer! Itâs great to see the yard full of dinghy sailboats, PSA back in session and people safely using Pettipaug. Thank you to the many volunteers that have contributed time and manual labor âspiffing upâ the club and grounds. We have received many positive comments. This fall, when the weather is a bit cooler, we will be looking for volunteers to finish up a few more projects. Unfortunately, I again need to comment on dogs at the club. Dog parents, please recognize the people are back. Not everyone is comfortable with dogs. And we have some very basic rules that especially need to be followed during peak season. Dogs must be leashed and under owner control at all times Dogs are not allowed on club grounds during PSA (program ends August 6) Dogs are not allowed in clubhouse or on the deck Owners are responsible to pick up after their dogs. (Extra bags are on the left wall of the Opti Shed. These should be deposited in the large dumpster on the way into the club) Also, a heads up to the date of Sunday, August 1, 2021. Pettipaug will be hosting the annual Paul Risseeuw Junior Regatta. The club will essentially be unavailable from 8:00 am â 4:00 pm. Please donât plan on accessing the club during the day. With Governor Lamontâs implementation of new protocols today, specifically that masks are no longer required outdoors if you are fully vaccinated, we are excited to announce Pettipaug will be open for Summer 2021. This weekend we will have a Work Party and on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend we will host the Commodore Race and Commission the club for another season. The Commission is requiring moorings be installed and removed professionally. Only moorings and tackle that are used seasonally may be stored over the winter at the club. If you have a mushroom anchor/mooring that will not be used this summer, please remove it from the grounds immediately. The club will take over any unidentified moorings that are not removed by May 31st. [cid:102c73b4-309b-413c-b5e8-67434197c314] Fellow members, With summer in full swing, the start of the junior program (PSA) and active use of the club by membership, it is necessary to share these annual reminders of club rules - Dogs: Dogs must be leashed and under owner control at all times. No dogs are allowed on club grounds during Sailing Academy activities. (8:30 - 4:00, Monday - Friday, June 28 - August 6) Dogs are not allowed in the clubhouse or on the clubhouse deck. Owners are responsible to pick up (waste/toys/sticks) after their dogs. Because the club was not officially open last year, Pettipaug was a haven to dogs and their owners. There was a lot of space and few people. Now that we are open, the yard is at full capacity and membership is actively using the grounds, we need to transition back to following the club rules so that all people are comfortable and feel safe. As a membership we can find the balance. There are many low usage times that owners and their dogs can still enjoy the grounds. Dog owners, please, use good judgement and self-enforce the club rules regarding dogs. ***There are bags for waste in the metal dispenser attached to the side of the Opti Shed. Disposal should be in the large garbage container on the corner of the property. Sailing Academy: The club's junior sailing program - Pettipaug Sailing Academy (PSA) - starts tomorrow! This means there will be a lot of children and teens on the club grounds from 8:30 - 4:00, Monday - Friday until August 6th. Please, drive slowly on the road to the club and on River Road. Many of the children ride their bikes to and from. Club usage is limited during PSA. Members should not be on the deck. No members should be using the ramp or docks when the junior sailors are launching or landing their boats. (Usually around 9:30, noon and 3) The PYC Board is excited the membership is back and pleased to see the club being used. It's time to enjoy this beautiful spot on the river and get out sailing!

Reminder - Removal of Anchors and Tackle If you have a mushroom anchor/mooring that will not be used this summer, please remove it from the grounds immediately. The club will take over any unidentified moorings that are not removed by May 31st. Please remember, boats may not be over 20â in length. Each boat is required to have a sticker.
